And Then There Were Six....

Man down! We’ve lost a member of our family. Our dear Obie (named after the stone Obsidian, despite common misconception), a bullied little black and green chicken, has gone missing.

Every morning, we let out our feathered friends to walk around the yard, pecking away at various edibles and non-edibles (apparently, chickens don’t know that pebbles don’t digest very well). Obie, 1 out of 7 chickens, was the black sheep (chicken) from the get-go.

A loner at heart, quite often she was the only one who would stay in the coop while her adopted sisters would wander away and explore the land. The few times she mastered enough courage to go explore beyond the four wooden panels she would call home, Kami would happen.

You see, Kami is a special creature. Part gremlin, part tornado, part adorable little doggy... our little monster likes to bite. Not in a vicious “I want to eat you!” kind of way. She just likes to put things in her mouth. *insert dirty comment here*
It's almost as if we randomly picked her up from a sewer while on vacation and shipped her over to North America so that she can be domesticated and all.. wait... yeah. That did happen.
So, needless to say, our puppy has some strange behaviours.. like licking Leo's teeth.. and putting things that do not belong in one's mouth in her mouth.

One of the things she got accustomed to holding between her teeth was Obie. Not the entire chicken.. just her backside. This was never done cruelly, though.. and despite constant efforts from my boyfriend and I to scold her and stop her from getting a mouthful of feathers.. it would just happen.

So, needless to say, Obie had it rough. I do wonder if Kami sensed that she was the weakest link. Then again, Kami also digs up dead animals and brings back home deer femurs.

It’s been three days that our sensitive feathered friend has gone missing. Maybe she went far into the woods and got lost.. maybe she flew away! (Black sheep have special hidden talents sometimes.) Perhaps she willingly left her temporary chicken coop home to explore a new world free from doggy mouth embraces.. a land where non-verbal consent exists among animals! Or maybe, she met a fox. And they ran away together to never-neverland and lived happily ever after.

The end.

May you be at peace, Obie. Thank you for the eggs.

  1. Awww I'm so sad!! I hope Obie is ok where ever she is and that she is safe and happy. You made sure she was loved and taken care of from the get - go, despite her being a little different from the others and that's amazing :) you never know, you may turn around one day and find she has returned! She was lucky to have you Tam!! ❤️
